Qiu Jie (1961- )

Born in Shanghai, Qiu Jie is a Chinese painter and draughtsman.

He grew up during the Cultural Revolution and learnt to draw very early by copying propaganda images. After graduating from the School of Applied Arts in Shanghai, he began his career as a designer. His first exhibition was at the Xu Hui Cultural Palace in Shanghai. At almost thirty, he was selected by the Geneva School of Fine Arts in Switzerland, where he taught for a few years. He was given an atelier in Geneva and received prizes from the city and canton of Geneva and from the Swiss Confederation. He was also awarded a Simon I. Patino scholarship at the Cité des Arts in Paris.

QIU Jie exhibits all over the world, both solo and with other artists, notably in Basel with AI Wei Wei. His works are sold by prestigious galleries such as Saatchi in London and auction houses such as Sotheby’s. Public institutions (the Cernuschi Museum in Paris) and major international collectors have acquired many of his works in Europe and Asia. With Red Zone Arts, he takes part in two specific projects: Art Paris in 2014 and Museu do Oriente in 2016.

His dazibao brought him immediate recognition in Europe as well as in China. He composes them based on texts, calligraphies, traditional Chinese drawings, pop art-style pin-ups, world celebrities, historical figures and objects of luxury or everyday consumption – but above all, each Dazibao tells a story.

QIU Jie lives and works in Geneva and Shanghai.

Er wuchs während der Kulturrevolution auf und lernte das Zeichnen sehr früh, indem er Propagandabilder kopierte. QIU Jie stellt weltweit aus, sowohl allein als auch mit anderen Künstlern, insbesondere in Basel mit AI Wei Wei. Seine Werke werden von renommierten Galerien wie Saatchi in London und Auktionshäusern wie Sotheby’s verkauft. Öffentliche Institutionen (Musée Cernuschi in Paris) und große internationale Sammler haben viele seiner Werke in Europa und Asien erworben. Mit Galerie ORIANE (früher Red Zone Arts) nimmt er an zwei besonderen Projekten teil: Art Paris 2014 und Museu do Oriente 2016.
Seine Dazibao haben ihm sowohl in Europa als auch in China sofortige Anerkennung eingebracht. Er komponiert sie aus Texten, Kalligraphien, traditionellen chinesischen Zeichnungen, Pin-ups im Pop-Art-Stil, weltberühmten Persönlichkeiten, historischen Figuren und Objekten des Luxus- oder Alltagskonsums – vor allem aber erzählt jedes Dazibao eine Geschichte.

Il enseigne quelques années, obtient un atelier d’artiste à Genève et reçoit des prix de la Ville et du Canton de Genève ainsi que de la Confédération helvétique. Il bénéficie d’une bourse Simon I. Il expose dans le monde entier, en solo comme en groupe, notamment à Bâle avec Ai Wei Wei.
